Year 9 Art students were lucky enough to take part in an artist workshop with jewellery designer Rachel Butlin. Rachel creates geometric pieces, inspired by colour and shape. Students designed and created their own brooch as part of their GCSE coursework project ‘Abstract Art’. The brooches were developed using traditional jewellery techniques in an unconventional way, stretching the limits of what is perceived as jewellery. Students experimented with riveting and enamelling, adding formica shapes to enhance their brooch. Rachel also gave students a careers guidance talk, explaining the opportunities available within the creative sector. Students really enjoyed exploring materials which they were unfamiliar with, along with being able to work with a practising artist.
