STEM Day – Wednesday 27th March 2019

On Wednesday 27th March 2019, Year 8 girls from Arena Academy took part in Greenlight For Girls g4g Day with high-tech polymer materials supplier Covestro at Birmingham’s ThinkTank Science Museum.

Throughout the day, the girls took part in a series of informative, interactive and engaging workshops designed and led by female scientists and engineers currently working for Covestro, alongside girls from other schools in the local community.

The activities ranged from learning about chemical reactions creatively by making polymer worms to engineering their very own drawing robots. They also experienced workshops with Covestro employees about their careers, overcoming obstacles and traditional role models, including Technical Engineer Daniela Behrens who inspired the girls with her ‘anything is possible’ attitude.

Recent research released by the Department of Education shows that school girls in the UK enjoy science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects significantly less than boys. Subsequently, girls are less likely to study STEM subjects at A-Level. CORE Education Trust, who sponsor Arena Academy, pride themselves on putting equality and diversity at the heart of all the work they do, ensuring their schools live and breathe this mission. By providing their girls with opportunities to experience STEM in the workplace first-hand, Arena Academy continue to develop the character and communication of their students alongside expanding their prospective career pathways.

Daniela Behrens, Technical Engineer at Covestro said: “Don’t let anyone tell you differently, anything is possible! The world needs more women in technology and science.”
